This year has been full of unexpected turns for our family: a move, a fixer-upper, a new precious babe, a flood in the basement, the list goes on. Meanwhile, homeschool marches onward! With the birth of our new baby at the beginning of the school year, I have been looking for ways to do things better and to make things simpler; there's still one of me, but now there's three of them! That's initially why Smartick stood out to me when they contacted me last summer about trying their supplemental math program.
Truth-be-told, we've not done really anything with having our children use computers in any of their homeschooling to this point. We are super careful about screen time, but I saw this as a great way to help Matthew develop some good computer skills (an essential in today's world), all-the-while building great math skills. I also saw it as a great opportunity for him to be more independent on one of his courses rather than having me work directly with him during the entire time.
We have been so pleased with the program. Matthew does a daily lesson that is only 15 minutes long (the perfect amount of time, in my opinion). It's enough time to captivate my son's attention, but it's not too much time. Smartick adapts each lesson to the student's level. It teaches new concepts when the child is ready. I love it because he can go ahead and get started whenever.
The program gives the child an avatar and their own world to customize. Using Smartick has sparked Matthew's interest in computers and is helping him improve his math skills and his computer skills. I like it because it provides the child an opportunity to go back and correct any problems they miss. Smartick also sends me the results of each daily session.
We are really enjoying using Smartick! If you were to ask Matthew his favorite school subject, it is math, and that speaks volumes to me. You can read more here. Thank you, Smartick, for the opportunity to review your product!
